Home Assistant gives you more control
You can combine devices from many brands, create detailed automations and keep substantial parts of the workflow local. That flexibility is why people accept the extra maintenance.
Managed ecosystems are easier to operate
Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home reduce the amount of server management you need to understand. If your priority is convenience rather than customisation, that can be a perfectly sensible trade-off.
Matter narrows some gaps, but does not remove them
Matter can improve cross-platform device compatibility, while Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi and proprietary cloud integrations still coexist. The protocol on the box does not tell you everything about whether a device works locally.
Choose around the devices you own
Before changing platform, list your current devices and identify which integrations are local, cloud-dependent or unsupported. A theoretical feature advantage is useless if your heating or doorbell cannot participate.
