Can you move a domain without moving the website?

Yes. Moving the domain registration to a new registrar, changing DNS and moving website hosting are three different operations. You can change one while leaving the others where they are.

Registrar transfer changes who manages the registration

The domain can move from one registrar to another while the DNS records continue pointing to the same website host. ICANN confirms that registrants have the right to transfer eligible domains between registrars. See ICANN transfer guidance.

Changing hosting usually needs only DNS changes

You can copy the website to a new host and then update DNS so the domain points to the new server. The registrar itself does not have to change.

Changing nameservers changes DNS control

Moving DNS to Cloudflare or another provider changes who hosts the DNS zone. It does not automatically transfer the registrar or move the website application.

Transfer locks can affect registrar moves

ICANN rules allow or require transfer restrictions in some situations, including the first 60 days after initial registration and certain changes of registrant. If a registrar transfer is your goal, check the lock status before changing registrant details.

Copy the DNS zone before changing anything

Website, email, verification and other services may all depend on DNS records. A migration that moves only the web record while forgetting MX or TXT records can break email or third-party services.
