What type of website hosting do you need?

Choose the hosting category from the application and maintenance burden, not from the provider's sales page.

Static or mostly static site

Brochure sites, documentation and many modern front ends can use static or edge hosting. These platforms can be fast and low-maintenance, but check forms, server functions, build limits and custom-domain support.

WordPress

WordPress needs PHP, a supported database and HTTPS. WordPress.org currently recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+, and HTTPS. Managed WordPress hosting can reduce the amount of server administration you perform. See current WordPress requirements.

Online shop

A hosted commerce platform reduces the infrastructure burden, while self-managed commerce gives more control but makes updates, security and recovery your responsibility. Compare payment fees and application costs as well as hosting.

Custom application

Persistent back-end applications may fit a VPS or managed application platform. Check databases, background jobs, storage, scheduled work, bandwidth and deployment limits before committing.

Shared hosting still has a place

Traditional shared hosting can suit smaller PHP and WordPress sites when the provider's limits, backups and support are clear. The lowest introductory price is not necessarily the lowest ongoing cost.
