DOMAIN TOOLKIT
Useful domain tools, and what each one can actually tell you.
No single tool can tell you whether a domain is worth buying. Use different tools for different questions: market value, backlinks, traffic, history and buyer demand.
| Question | Useful tool type | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| What might the name sell for? | Automated appraisal | Estimated range and comparable names |
| What have similar domains sold for? | Sales database / marketplace research | Extension, wording, sale date and buyer type |
| Who links to it? | Backlink explorer | Referring domains, relevance, link quality and lost links |
| Does it rank or get traffic? | SEO traffic estimator | Ranking pages, traffic trend and keyword concentration |
| What used to be on it? | Web archive / historical checks | Previous topics, redirects, ownership patterns and reputation risk |
Automated appraisal tools
GoDaddy's appraisal tool uses market data and machine learning to estimate value. Treat the result as a reference point rather than a guaranteed sale price.
Comparable-sales research
Look for completed sales rather than only current asking prices. Similar wording, extension, length and end-user appeal matter more than superficial resemblance.
Backlink tools
Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz can help inspect referring domains and authority-style metrics. Use the underlying links and traffic data, not just the headline score.
Historical checks
Archive tools are particularly important for expired domains. A clean-looking name may previously have hosted unrelated, spammy or legally problematic content.
Build a small evidence pack
Before buying an expensive domain, save comparable sales, backlink screenshots, archive checks and any appraisal results. It makes your decision easier to revisit later.
